| Miles Davis - The Complete On The Corner Sessions | |
In June of 1972, Miles Davis entered Columbia’s 52nd St. Studios to record music that was eventually released as On The Corner and part of Big Fun – stuff that was so far out and future perfect, it was its own genre. The world finally caught up. Now fans can experience The Complete On The Corner Sessions, a collection of over 6 1/2 hours of music covering Miles’ studio recordings from ’72 to ’75, whose reputation precedes it and retains the signature spirit of an artist ever-changing. The Complete On The Corner Sessions includes over 2 hours of previously unreleased material, plus 5 tracks available for the first time in unedited form. As a bandleader, bringing in influences as diverse as funk, R&B, jazz, world, rock and 20th century classical music – a place where Afro and Indo and Stockhausen and Sly Stone and Hendrix and James Brown were one nation under a groove – Miles was breaking down boundaries and creating a music whose elements could be extracted for any musical genre, and in turn influenced a whole new generation of artists. This innovation of style, in concert with producer Teo Macero’s creative editing technique, laid the foundation and informed whole new genres… drum & bass, hip hop, electronica. Inside, read extensive liner notes from arranger/composer Paul Buckmaster, music journalist Tom Terrell, and multi-Grammy® winner Bob Belden, plus dozens of rare photos of the musicians. This last set in the “metal spine” series documenting Miles’ career, chronologically, as bandleader – agent provocateur – is the ultimate in electric funk-rock jazz taken to a whole other level. | Miles Davis Evolution of the Groove featuring Nas and Santana In Stores Now!
![]() To purchase this new release, check out iTunes, Amazon, or visit the Sony Music Store. Part tribute and part rejuvenation project, 'Evolution Of The Groove' brings Miles Davis, the jazz trumpeter and composer responsible for 'Bitches Brew,' 'Birth of the Cool,' 'Kind of Blue' and many other classics, back to the fore. A precursor to a 6-CD box set 'Miles Davis: The Complete On The Corner Sessions,' the 'Evolution Of The Groove' remix EP premieres tracks with rapper Nas on vocals and his father Olu Dara on trumpet, Carlos Santana's guitar mastery, and an A-list contemporary music ensemble of Miles' nephew Vince Wilburn, Jr. on drums and programming, and bassist Charley Drayton (Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop, Divinyls) with co-production by jazz funk legend Lenny White (Return To Forever). This five-song EP draws from five different Miles Davis albums, providing a unique context for his landmark recordings of the '50s, '60s and '70s in today’s contemporary marketplace. The EP takes off with a previously unreleased snippet of riffing and studio chatter between Miles and his producer Irving Townshend, during a "Freddie Freeloader" take from the famed "Kind of Blue" sessions. Nas appears on 1966’s “Freedom Jazz Dance (Evolution Of The Groove),” and his verses manage to perfectly compliment Davis' horn. The centerpiece of the set “It’s About That Time” shines with Carlos Santana on guitar – a satisfying blend of Miles’ music and modern beats. "Honky Tonk" serves up some raw funk, setting up the closer “Black Satin,” from the funk orchestra sessions for "On The Corner." 'Evolution Of The Groove' is an elegant tribute to the legacy of Miles and just one more achievement demonstrating why Miles is a jazz master and still the man for every generation. |

| Miles Davis - 6 Reissues | |
2005 marked the 50th Anniversary of Miles Davis making Columbia Records his home. Columbia/Legacy/Jazz celebrated this occasion with a stunning array of releases. After Kind Of Blue (now over 10 million in sales worldwide), Miles Davis was again searching for a new group and a new sound. In late 1964, he formed his "second great quintet" with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. Miles would say later: "I knew right away that this was going to be a motherfucker of a group." These six classic reissues tell the compelling story of that two-year quest to form what many consider to be the greatest small group in the history of jazz. | NEWEST BOX IN SERIES: THE COMPLETE ON THE CORNER SESSIONS (#8)
|
Track Listing & Audio Clips Columbia/Legacy Jazz presents The Complete On The Corner Sessions, the next chapter in the 8-time, Grammy-winning deluxe box set series. "I got everybody in the band but the devil on tambourine." - Miles Davis This box set tells the compelling story of a three-year odyssey of genre-defying innovation that rocked the jazz establishment. In addition to core band members Michael Henderson, Pete Cosey, Mtume, Dave Liebman, Reggie Lucas and Al Foster, Miles Davis brings in another 20 hand-picked musicians between 1972 - ‘75, each bringing their own musical influences to the group’s sound. Miles again sets new standards, creating an unparalleled legacy. From the new box set liner notes (read complete notes in the set’s 120-page full color booklet): “When we recorded In Concert: Live At Philharmonic Hall, that was the first time I realized the divide that Miles was creating. When we finished that night, all the audience could do was stare. Young people were in awe because they were introduced to a new music that had never been heard before. The old jazz fans of his were confused; some of them were actually angry. After that concert, a critic – I can’t remember his name – ran up and said, “Miles, every move you’ve made musically, I’ve been there. But I can’t get to where you’re at now.” Miles looked at him and he said, “What the fuck am I supposed to do, muthafuckah, wait for you to get there?” … Mtume BOX SET HIGHLIGHTS:
